Rune Casting Backlash

Sometimes runecasters, as careful as they are when drawing or inscribing runes, make mistakes. When a runecaster rolls a 1 on the casting die, regardless of the wild die, he experiences backlash and must roll a d8 on the table below.

1 All variable effects of the rune are doubled.
2 Runecaster is shaken.
* Runes are closely associated with the four elements. Often an incorrectly drawn rune causes negative elemental consequences.
3 Air- A momentary portal to the Plane of Air is opened and the runecaster is accosted by a howling blast of air that deals a 3d6 points of sonic damage. The howling blast of air effects all creatures in a small blast template centered on the caster.
4 Earth- A momentary portal to the Plane of Earth is opened. Large, irregular chunks of stone materialize and explode into fragments that deal 3d6 points of damage. The stone explosion effects all creatures in a small blast template centered on the caster.
5 Fire- A momentary portal to the Plane of Fire is opened and the runecaster is accosted by a gout of flame that deals a 3d6 points of fire damage. The gout of flame effects all creatures in a small blast template centered on the caster.
6 Water- A momentary portal to the Plane of Water is opened and the runcaster is assaulted by a small powerful tsunami that deals 3d6 points of damage and extinguishes all fire within the effected area. The tsunami effects all creatures in a small blast template centered on the caster.
7 A minor inconsistency in the drawing of the rune damages the runecaster. The runecaster is shaken and immediately suffers a wound.
8 A major mistake in the drawn runes create a severe backlash upon the runecaster. The caster suffers one level of fatigue and is incapacitated on a failed vigor roll.
